John Douglas Sutherland Campbell
CAMPBELL, John Douglas Sutherland. b. London, 6 August 1845; d. East Cowes, Isle of Wight, 2 May 1914. He was the eldest son and heir of the eighth Duke of Argyll. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, Eton, the University of St Andrews, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He married (1871) Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. He was Liberal Member of Parliament for Argyll (1868-78), before serving as private secretary to his father, Secretary of State for India (1868-71).
