John Campbell Shairp

SHAIRP, John Campbell. b. Houston, Uphall, Linlithgowshire , 30 July 1819; d. Ormsary, Ardrishaig, Argyll, 18 September 1885. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Glasgow University (1836-39), after which he was a Snell Exhibitioner (a closed scholarship for Glasgow graduates) at Balliol College, Oxford (1840-44). During his time at Oxford he won the Newdigate Prize for English Poetry (1842); he was friendly with Arthur Hugh Clough, and influenced by Matthew Arnold and by the poetry of William Wordsworth*.
