John Baptiste Calkin
CALKIN, John Baptiste. b. 16 March 1827; d. 15 April 1905. From a highly musical family, he received his early musical education from his father, James Calkin, who was a composer, violinist, pianist and organist. He was also a director of the Philharmonic Society, organist of Regent Square Chapel, Gray's Inn Road (from 1824) and a member of the management committee of the Society of British Musicians. John Baptiste learned the organ from his father and became organist and precentor at St Columba’s College, Navan (later Rathfarnham) between 1846 and 1853, succeeding E.G. Monk*.
