Johannes Englisch
ENGLISCH, Johannes. b. Buchsweiler, Alsace, ca. 1502; d. Strasbourg, 31 July 1577. In his youth a Catholic, he became Librarian and Secretary to Count Philip II of Hanau-Lichtenberg, a post that he was forced to resign on embracing the Reformation. He took refuge in Strasbourg, where he became a teacher, holding devotional meetings nearby in the village of Handschuheim. He later became a diaconus at the minster at Strasbourg, then at the Neuen-Kirche (1550-1561), then back to the minster (1561-62), after which he became a ‘Freiprediger’, or independent preacher.
