Johann Albrecht Bengel
BENGEL, Johann Albrecht. b. Winnenden, Württemberg, 24 June 1687; d. Stuttgart, 2 November 1752. He was educated at the University of Tübingen (MA 1704). He became assistant at Metzingen, near Urach (1707), returning to Tübingen to repeat a year as a ‘Repetent’ in 1708, before becoming an assistant preacher at Stuttgart (1711-13). He then (1713-41) became a preceptor and preacher at the monastery school at Denkendorf, near Esslingen, where he exercised a great influence on the pupils. Among them was Philipp Friedrich Hiller*, the ‘Swabian Gerhardt’. Bengel became Prelate of Herbrechtingen (1741-49) and of Alpirsbach, the senior post in the church in Württemberg (1749-52).
