Jimmy Owens
OWENS, James (Jimmy) Lloyd. b. Clarksdale, Mississippi, 9 December 1930; d. San Diego, California, 26 November 2023. After school at Jackson, Mississippi, he attended Millsaps College, and was a jazz band arranger; after a conversion he directed music in several churches in southern California. He married Carol Owens* in 1954. Beginning in the ‘Jesus Movement’, the Owens were active in writing contemporary Christian musicals, performing and recording in various places in California, and doing musical missions for the Church of the Way in Los Angeles, pastored by Jack Hayford*. In 1991 the Owens established in Singapore the School of Music Ministries, International (SMM).
