It is not until recently that the composer of ‘Glory to the Newborn King’ has been determined. The song is designated as ‘Traditional African American’ in most hymnals and as an ‘African American spiritual’* in a few. The second of these, African American spiritual, is almost certainly not correct. No collections of spirituals list an entry by this name, including the monumental Lyrics of the Afro-American Spiritual edited by Erskine Peters (Westport, Connecticut, 1993).
