Jeremiah Clarke (II)
CLARKE (Clark), Jeremiah (II). b. Worcester, ca. 1743; d. Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, 11 May 1809. He was raised at Worcester, where his father was a lay clerk at the cathedral. He published songs and chamber works, and played violin, harpsichord, and organ. He was organist of St Philip, Birmingham (1765–1803), and briefly of Worcester cathedral (1806–07).
He composed a few hymn tunes. The only one known today is BISHOPTHORPE (HTI 4175, A&MR 43) which first appeared in an anonymous collection of about 1780, Select Portions of the Psalms of David, for the use of parish churches, to the words of Thomas Sternhold*’s Psalm 15, ‘Within thy tabernacle, Lord,/ Who shall inhabit still?’ It came...
