James Oren Thompson
James Oren Thompson. b. Waldo Patent, Maine, 9 June 1834; d. St Petersburg, Florida, 28 September 1917. His remarkably varied career presents some problems and unsolved questions. According to Hymntime, he was a seaman at the age of 16 to 18 (1850-52) before working in Belfast, Waldo County, Maine, for a newspaper, the State Signal. At some point he may have undergone training for the role of pastor, for he was listed as such when he enlisted in the Union army in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as an officer in the Maine Volunteer Infantry, until discharged in 1864 (wounds?).
