In thee, great God, with songs of praise. Joel Barlow* (1754-1812).
Barlow ‘corrected and enlarged’ Isaac Watts*’s The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament and Applied to the Christian State and Worship (1719) at the request of the General Association of Connecticut (Congregational Church), a work published in 1786 as Psalms carefully suited to the Christian Worship in the United States of America, being Dr. Watts’s Imitation of the Psalms of David, as improved by Mr. Barlow. After several editions it was replaced by Dwight’s Watts, compiled by Yale College president Timothy Dwight* (Hartford, 1801) (JJ, p. 114).
