In Christ there is no east or west. John Oxenham* (1852-1941).
Written for ‘The Pageant of Darkness and Light’, presented by the London Missionary Society in 1908 as part of an exhibition, ‘The Orient in London’. Oxenham (William Arthur Dunkerley) wrote the words for the pageant (directed by his nephew, the Revd Dugald Macfadyen). The pageant was in four parts, North America, Africa, the South Seas, and India: this hymn, based on Galatians 3: 28, comes from the last part. It was printed in SofPE and The Fellowship Hymn Book (revised edition, 1933). During the last half of the 20th century, with its emphasis on global culture and understanding, it became very popular:
