If your heart keeps right. Lizzie DeArmond* (1847-1936).
This gospel hymn begins ‘If the dark shadows gather’. It is, by far, Lizzie DeArmond’s most popular hymn. It was introduced at Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1913 during a Billy Sunday (William Ashley Sunday, 1862-1935) evangelistic campaign (Sanville, p. 82). The first verse and refrain follow:
If the dark shadows gather As you go along, Do not grieve for their coming, Sing a cheery song, There is joy for the taking, It will soon be light, —Ev’ry cloud wears a rainbow If your heart keeps right.
