I once was a stranger to grace and to God. Robert Murray McCheyne* (1813-1843).
This hymn is sometimes known as ‘Jehovah Tsidkenu’. It is dated 18 November 1834, and was first published in the Scottish Christian Herald (March 1836) (JJ, p. 557). It was then published in Songs of Zion to cheer and guide Pilgrims on their way to the Heavenly Jerusalem (Edinburgh, 1841), and (with the following words added) ‘By the late Rev. R.M. McCheyne’ (Dundee, 1843); and then in Memoir and Remains of the Rev Robert Murray McCheyne, Minister of St Peter’s Church, Dundee, edited by his friend Andrew A. Bonar (Dundee and Edinburgh, 1844).
