I heard the voice of Jesus say. Horatius Bonar* (1808-1889).
Written during the author’s ministry in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, this hymn was first published in his Hymns, Original and Selected (1846) and subsequently appeared in the first series of his Hymns of Faith and Hope (1857), where it was given the title ‘The Voice from Galilee’. It has become easily the most popular of Bonar’s many hymns and is found in numerous hymnals of all denominations, and in all English-speaking countries.
The first stanza is based on Jesus’ words in Matthew 11: 28-31, the second on his encounter with the Samaritan woman by the well (John 4: 10-14) and the third on his famous saying ‘I am the light of...
