I could not do without Thee
I could not do without Thee. Frances Ridley Havergal* (1836-1879).
Written 7 May 1873, and printed in leaflet form in 1873; then in the magazine Home Words (1873) and in Under the Surface (1874). It had six stanzas. It was included in the Second Edition of A&M (1875), and became widely popular: it is found in the Primitive Methodist Hymnal (1887, 1889, in four stanzas) and the Wesleyan Methodist Hymn Book (1904) (six stanzas) as well as in EH and MHB (four stanzas). It remained in A&M until A&MR, after which it was dropped. It is still found in the Song Book of the Salvation Army (1953 and 1986...
