Hymns and Psalms (HP) (1983). The British Methodist Hymns and Psalms was sub-titled ‘A Methodist and Ecumenical Hymn Book’ reflecting the initial hope that this might be a hymn book project in which the United Reformed Church, the Churches of Christ, and the Wesleyan Reform Union would join. It was also a reflection of the ecumenical mood of the time, in spite of the rejection by the Church of England of possible Anglican-Methodist union in the early 1970s. The Methodist Conference of 1979 instructed its Faith and Order Committee to prepare a new book ‘embodying the best in Methodist hymnody and at the same time making a contribution to the life and worship of the Church universal’.
