Hugh Porter
PORTER, Hugh. b. Heron Lake, Minnesota, 18 September 1897; d. New York, 1960. A precocious child, Hugh received good musical training, and at the age of fourteen was a substitute organist in local churches; at sixteen he toured every state in the Union with The Flying Squadron, a Prohibition group of singers and orators. He attended the American Conservatory, Chicago, Illinois (BM with honors, 1920), Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois (BA, 1924), where he was chapel organist; on Sundays he played the organ in several churches in the Chicago area.
