How lovely, Lord, how lovely
How lovely, Lord, how lovely. Arlo Duba* (1929- ).
This metrical psalm, beginning ‘How lovely, Lord, how lovely/ Is Your abiding place’, was written in 1984 when Duba was a member of the ‘Psalter Task Force’ of the Presbyterian Church of America. It is based on Psalm 84, and is the best known of four versions of psalms by Duba in The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990). According to McKim (1993) it was written because existing paraphrases of the psalm ‘did not seem to carry with them the understanding of God’s house being a wonderfully pleasing place in which to be’ (p. 156). It is set in the 1990 book to MERLE’S TUNE, by Hal H. Hopson*.
