How good is the God we adore. Joseph Hart* (1712-1768).
Like ‘This, this is the God we adore’, this is a variant from the original ‘This God is the God we adore’*. It is a two-stanza hymn made from the last stanza of Hart’s long hymn (seven 8-line stanzas) beginning ‘No prophet nor dreamer of dreams’, reproduced in the entry to ‘This God is the God...’. The reduction to two 4-line stanzas was made by Martin Madan* in the Appendix (1763) to his Collection of Psalms and Hymns. The version with this opening line was found in the Enlarged London Hymn Book (1863), and has been preferred by AHB, and by CP and RS.
