Holy Spirit, come, confirm us
Holy Spirit, come, confirm us. (William) Brian Foley* (1919-2000). This was one of 14 hymns by Foley in New Catholic Hymnal (1971). As the Companion to RS (1999) points out (p. 380), the word ‘confirm’ in line 1 means ‘make firm’.
The hymn was rapidly adopted by books outside the Roman Catholic Church, appearing in WOV and MHfT. It has been included in many books since that time, including NEH, HP, RS and A&MCP. It is sometimes appropriately set (as in HP and RS) to DRAKES BROUGHTON by the Roman Catholic Edward Elgar*.
