This text was written for one specific occasion and place but, as is the author’s custom, in such a way as to make it more generally useful. While Archdeacon of Norwich he was approached by the cathedral’s Vice-Dean, Canon Frank Colquhoun, to provide a hymn to mark the installation of a new Dean, David Edwards. It was written at home at Bramerton, Norfolk, in January 1978. Norwich Cathedral is dedicated to ‘the Holy and Undivided Trinity’, so ‘a Trinitarian form seemed right’ and the text duly reflects this dedication.
