Henry Twells

TWELLS, Henry. b. Ashted, near Birmingham, 13 March 1823; d. Bournemouth, 19 January 1900. He was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham, and Peterhouse, Cambridge (BA, 1848, MA 1851). He was ordained (deacon 1851, priest 1852) and served his title at Berkhamstead, before moving to become curate in Stratford-upon-Avon. He then spent two years as Master of St Andrew’s House School in Mells, Somerset, and then became Headmaster of Godolphin School, Hammersmith in 1856. During his 14 years there he published Poetry for Repetition (revised edition 1882), which proved very popular as a school textbook. ‘At even ere the sun was set’* is the best known of his hymns.
