Henry Downton
DOWNTON, Henry. b. Pulverbatch, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 12 February 1818; d. Hopton, Suffolk, 8 June 1885. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge (BA 1840, MA 1843), he took Holy Orders (deacon 1843, priest 1844) serving curacies at Bembridge, Isle of Wight (1843-44) and Holy Trinity, Cambridge (1847-49). After eight years as perpetual curate of St John’s, Chatham (1849-57), he was English Chaplain at Geneva (1857-73), before becoming rector of Hopton, Suffolk, on the border with Norfolk, from 1873 until his death.
