Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power. Elisha Hoffman* (1839-1929).
This gospel hymn is famous for its repeated phrase and its refrain, ‘Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?’ It was printed in Spiritual Songs, for Gospel Meetings and the Sunday School (Cleveland, Ohio, 1878), compiled by Hoffman and J.H. Tenney. It was included in many editions of Ira D. Sankey*’s Sacred Songs and Solos, and in many other books; in Britain it is found in Redemption Hymnal (1951) and New Redemption Hymnal (1986), and in the Song Book of the Salvation Army (1953 and 1986 editions).
The refrain provides a recurring motif in the rousing poem by Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931), ‘General William Booth...
