Hartmann Schenck
SCHENCK, Hartmann. b. Ruhla, near Eisenach, 7 April 1634; d. Ostheim, 2 May 1681. The son of a merchant, Schenck was educated at the Gymnasium at Coburg, after which he studied theology at Helmstedt (interrupted by the plague) and Jena. He was appointed pastor at Bibra, near Meiningen (1662), and diaconus at Ostheim (1669) and priest at Völkershausen.
Schenck is known for the simple and much-loved one-verse hymn ‘Unsern Ausgang segne Gott’ (‘God bless our going out’) at EG 163. Schenck’s hymns appeared in Güldene Bet-Kunst (Nürnberg, 1677), reprinted with a much longer title in 1680 as Hoher Fürstlicher Gräflicher Freyherrlicher Adelicher Und anderer so wol Junger als Alter Tugend-Hertzen...
