Hark! The song of Jubilee
Hark! The song of Jubilee. James Montgomery* (1771-1854).
This hymn was written for the London Missionary Society, and first sung at a special service at Spa Fields Chapel, London, 14 May 1818. It was first published in the Evangelical Magazine, July 1818, in three 8-line stanzas. It appeared in Montgomery’s Greenland and Other Poems (1819) and in the Eighth Edition of Thomas Cotterill*’s Selection of Psalms and Hymns for Public and Private Use (1819). The circumstances of its composition are indicated in a broadsheet published in Sheffield in 1819:
