Gracious Saviour, gentle Shepherd
Gracious Saviour, gentle Shepherd. Jane Eliza Leeson* (1807/8-1881) and John Keble* (1818-1866). Leeson’s Hymns and Scenes of Childhood (1842) included three hymns, ‘Shepherd, in Thy bosom folded’, ‘Loving Shepherd of Thy sheep’*, and ‘Infant sorrow, infant weakness’. These formed the basis of a hymn written for the Salisbury Hymn-Book (1857) by John Keble*, who assisted Horatio Bolton, Earl Nelson*, with the editing. Keble seems to have taken Leeson’s hymns and adapted them into one hymn, adding material of his own. A quatrain from ‘Loving Shepherd of Thy sheep’ was completely re-written as verse 2:
‘Loving Shepherd’‘Gracious Shepherd’, verse 2
Loving Shepherd, ever near, Teach Thy...
