Gott des Himmels und der Erden. Heinrich Albert* (1604-1651).
This celebrated and beautiful hymn (‘God of heaven and earth’) is found in the ‘Morgen’ section of EG in the full seven stanzas, dated 1642 (EG 445). The German text will be found alongside the fine translation by Catherine Winkworth*, ‘God who madest earth and heaven’*. Winkworth noted that it was ‘not infrequently played at early morning in some of the quiet little German country towns or baths’ (p. 184). Both JJ and the Handbook to the Lutheran Hymnal quote Karl Johann Cosack of Königsberg (author of Zur Geschichte der evangelischen ascetischen Literatur in Deutschland, Basel & Ludwigsburg, 1871, though I have not found...
