God who created this garden of earth
God who created this garden of earth. Richard Granville Jones* (1926-2022).
Written in 1967 and first published in 100HfT (1969), and thus in A&MNS. The original first line was ‘God who created this Eden of earth’, which is used in A&MNS. It is a meditation on the Fall, with Adam’s sin being negated by the Redemption of the world by the second Adam, as in 1 Corinthians 15: 21-22. It was not in subsequent editions of A&M , A&MCP (2000) and A&MRW (2013), but it crossed the Atlantic in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada (1971) set to QUEDLINBURG, by Johann Christian Kittel ((1732-1809).
