God of grace and God of glory. Harry Emerson Fosdick* (1878-1969).
This hymn has been called a ‘paradigmatic hymn of early twentieth-century USA liberal Christianity’ (Young, 1993, p. 367). It was written by Fosdick in 1930 at his summer home at Boothbay Harbour, Maine. It was sung at the opening on 5 October 1930 of the inter-denominational Riverside Church in New York City, where Fosdick was a famous preacher. It was sung again at the dedication service, 8 February 1931. It was printed in Praise and Service (New York, 1932), edited by H.
