God, my Father, loving me
God, my Father, loving me. George Wallace Briggs* (1875-1959).
First published in Songs of Praise for Boys and Girls (1929), in five stanzas. It then appeared in the ‘For Children’ section of SofPE (1931), revised and with the last stanza omitted:
Then, when I am called to share
Yonder home thou dost prepare,
I shall meet my King, and praise
Him through everlasting days.
Apart from this stanza it is a good example of a hymn for children, containing profound truths in simple language. The 7-syllable couplets make the hymn easily memorable in short sections. It was once well known: it was in MHB (1933), in Ireland in ICH4 (1960) and in Australia in WOV (1977). It is found in RS. The Companion...
