Gilbert Keith Chesterton
CHESTERTON, Gilbert Keith. b. Campden Hill, London, 29 May 1874; d. Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, 14 June 1936. He was educated at Colet Court, Hammersmith, and St Paul’s School, London. He took English, French and Latin classes at University College, London, and art classes at the Slade School of Art (1892-95). After an initial period in publishing, he moved into journalism and writing. In 1901 he married Frances Blogg, an Anglo-Catholic (who wrote the carol ‘How far is it to Bethlehem?’). He was received into the Roman Catholic Church in July 1922, his wife following in 1926.
