George Gilbert Stocks
STOCKS, George Gilbert. b. Huddersfield, Yorkshire, 3 September 1877; d. Epsom, Surrey, 20 October 1960. The son of an architect, Stocks was a pupil of Parry* at Oxford. He was awarded the Oxford D.Mus degree in 1908. He was organist and choirmaster at St Edward’s School, Oxford (1902-12), before being appointed head of music at Repton School, Derbyshire, where he remained until retirement in 1934. He retired to Croydon, and acted as an examiner for the London College of Music (1934-60).
Stocks compiled the Repton supplement to A&M, consisting of 69 hymns, entitled Repton School: Hymns for Use in Chapel (1924). It included 23 original compositions by Stocks. The book made use of several...
