Geoffrey Laycock
LAYCOCK, Geoffrey Stephen Newton. b. York, 27 January 1927; d. Norwich, 21 May 1986. He was a student of the organ under Sir Edward Bairstow*. He later studied at the Royal College of Music. After teaching in schools, he was appointed principal lecturer in music, Keswick Hall College, Norwich (1966-81). For part of that time he was organist of St George’s Roman Catholic Church, Norwich.
He was the co-editor, responsible for the music, with Anthony Petti*, of the New Catholic Hymnal (1971), for which he provided a translation of the Latin Vesper hymn, ‘Jam sol recedit igneus’, beginning ‘The setting sun now dies away’, and an original hymn, ‘When all is dark and as the night’.
