Francis Turner Palgrave
PALGRAVE, Francis Turner. b. Great Yarmouth, 28 September 1824; d. London, 24 October 1897. The son of Sir Francis Palgrave, a distinguished historian, he was educated at Charterhouse, London, and Balliol College, Oxford (where he was a contemporary of Matthew Arnold and Arthur Hugh Clough, and a pupil of Benjamin Jowett); he interrupted his studies to serve as Gladstone*’s private secretary. On taking first class honours (BA 1847, MA 1856), he briefly held a fellowship at Exeter College, Oxford, and was then for five years (1850-55) assistant to Frederick Temple (later Archbishop) at Kneller Hall, a teacher training college.
