For those we love within the veil. William Charter Piggott* (1872-1943).
Written in 1915, during the First World War, for a Commemoration Service at Whitefield’s Tabernacle, London. It was printed in SofP, and became very popular during the 20th century, being found in such books as BBCHB, CP and CH3.
It was almost certainly influenced by the need to commemorate the fallen of the Great War, even as early as 1915:
For those we love within the veil,Who once were comrades of our way,We thank thee, Lord; for they have won To cloudless day.
Although it was mainly popular in the aftermath of two world wars, it is still to be found in The Moravian Hymn Book (1975) with six of the original seven...
