Fling out the banner! Let it float. George Washington Doane* (1799-1859).
Written during the season of Advent in 1848 for a flag-raising ceremony at St Mary’s School, Burlington, New Jersey, of which Doane was the founder. It was printed in Verses for 1851 in Commemoration of the Third Jubilee of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Its energetic rhythm and its powerful imagery, suit the hymn’s theme of mission and dedication, and its promise of success: the last line, ‘We conquer only in that sign’, is a fine use of the famous ‘In hoc signo vinces’.
