Father, again in Jesu’s name we meet. Lucy Elizabeth Georgina Whitmore* (1792-1840). From Family Prayers for Every Day of the Week (1824), published without an author’s name. It was prefaced bythe well-known text on the Prodigal Son: ‘“When he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion.” Luke xv. 20’. It had four verses. It was included, with alterations, in Christian Psalmody (1833), edited by Edward Bickersteth*, and it became well known when three of the four stanzas were included in Church Hymns (1871).
