Evelyn Atwater Cummins

CUMMINS, Evelyn (née Atwater). b. Poughkeepsie, New York, 17 May 1891; d. Poughkeepsie, 30 August 1971. Evelyn Atwater was educated at the National Cathedral School, Washington, DC, and Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, New York. She married the Revd Alexander Griswold Cummins, rector of Christ Church, Poughkeepsie, in 1915. She led an active life in the community: she was a member of many local committees, and in 1947 she became police and fire commissioner of Poughkeepsie, the first woman police commissioner in New York State.
