Es ist das Heil uns kommen her. Paul Speratus* (1484-1551).
First published in Etlich christlich lider Lobgesang un[d] Psalm (Wittenberg, 1524), the ‘Achtliederbuch’, with two other hymns by Speratus, who thus became Luther’s earliest collaborator in the writing of hymns. This hymn had fourteen 7-line stanzas (Wackernagel, Das Deutsche Kirchenlied III, pp. 31-2). It was entitled ‘Ein lied vom gesetz und glauben, gewaltigklich mit götlicher schrifft verlegt.
