Ellen Jane Lorenz
LORENZ, Ellen Jane (Porter). b. Dayton, Ohio, 3 May 1907; d. Dayton, 31 December 1996. One of four children born to Karl Kumler Lorenz (1879-1965), business manager of Lorenz Publishing company, and Caroline (née Boalt) Lorenz (1882-1955), a writer of operettas and plays, Ellen Jane began piano lessons at age eight. She attended Wellesley College, Massachusetts, receiving the Billings Prize for Musical Talent (BA, 1929), the University of Akron, Ohio (MA 1931), and taught music in the Akron public schools. During 1931-32 she studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) and was assistant organist of the American Church. She was married to organist and composer James. B...
