Elias Mann

MANN, Elias. b. Stoughton, Massachusetts, 8 May 1750; d. Northampton, Massachusetts, 12 May 1825.  Mann was a carpenter, musician, singing teacher, and tunebook compiler, born in the northwest part of Stoughton, in a section of the city now called Canton.  He was the seventh of twelve children born to Theodore Mann (nda) and Abigail Day Mann (nda).  Although little is known about his childhood and musical training, it is speculated that he grew up in Dedham and Walpole, southwest of nearby Boston, and that he attended singing schools led by John Stickney (Collected Works, p. xxi).  Mann served in colonial military forces during 1775-1780.  He married Keziah Boyden (nda), 30 May 1782.
