Edward Osler
OSLER, Edward. b. Falmouth, Cornwall, 30 January 1798; d. Falmouth, 7 March 1863. He was destined for a medical career, and was apprenticed to a Dr Carvosso at Falmouth, followed by training at Guy’s Hospital, London (MRCS, 1818). He became a house surgeon at Swansea Infirmary, and surgeon to the House of Industry at Swansea (ca. 1819-25). During this period he developed an earlier interest in marine biology, published papers on the subject, and was elected a member of the Linnean Society. He then became a surgeon in the Royal Navy: his experience was reflected in a poem, The Voyage (1830), ‘a Poem written at Sea, and in the West Indies, and Illustrated by papers on Natural History’.
