Edward Joseph Burns
BURNS, Edward Joseph. b. Nelson, Lancashire, 16 May 1938. Educated at Baines’ Grammar School, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, the University of Liverpool, and Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He took Holy Orders (deacon 1961, priest 1962), and has served as a priest in his native Lancashire throughout his career: curacies at Leyland and Burnley were followed by a post as vicar of St Peter’s, Chorley (1967-75) and vicar of Christ Church, Fulwood, Preston (1975-2003). He is an Honorary Canon of Blackburn Cathedral and was Bishop’s Adviser on Hospital Chaplaincies, 1989-94. His hymn, ‘We have a gospel to proclaim’*, has become widely known.
