Edward Churton
CHURTON, Edward. b. Middleton Cheney, Northampton, 26 January 1800; d. Crayke, Yorkshire, 4 July 1874. The son of the rector of Middleton Cheney, he was educated at Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford (BA 1821, MA 1824). He took Holy Orders (deacon 1826, priest 1827). After teaching at Charterhouse and a period as headmaster of Hackney Church of England School, London (1830-35), he became rector of Crayke, near Easingwold, North Yorkshire, where he remained until his death. He was made a Prebendary of York (1841) and Archdeacon of Cleveland (1846). Thereafter in hymnbooks he was often referred to as ‘Archdeacon Churton’.
