Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus. Charles Price Jones* (1865-1949). According to some sources, this hymn was written in 1900 and appeared in the author’s Jesus Only, Songs and Hymns (Jackson, Mississippi, 1901) and later in His Fullness Songs (Nashville, Tennessee, 1906). The hymn has been included in approximately 70 hymnals since that time, most recently in the African American Heritage Hymnal (Chicago, 2001). Though Philippians 1: 9 is given as a source in the hymnal, Jones cited his continued studies of 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 as part of the inspiration for this hymn: ‘It grew out of my dissatisfaction with my limited ability to do good’(Jones, [1935] 1988, p. 63).
