Deep in our hearts. John Wesley Oldham* (1945– ).
Though John Wesley Oldham (b. 1945) has written more than eight thousand hymns and songs, ‘Deep in our hearts’ is his most popular and beloved. Written in 1994 while walking in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the text came to Oldham over the course of about an hour and a half. He subsequently sent it to composer Ronald Klusmeier* to be set to music, which did not occur until 1996, just prior to its performance in concert. It was subsequently published with the tune FREED in More Voices, the 2007 hymnal supplement to VU, as well as in Sing the Circle Wide (2016), the songbook of the Inshallah community choir in Waterloo, Ontario.
