Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness. Johann Franck* (1618-1677), translated by Catherine Winkworth* (1827-1878). Stanza 1 of this German text, beginning ‘Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele’* (‘Adorn thyself, beloved soul’) appeared in Johann Crüger*’s Geistliche Kirchen Melodien (Leipzig, 1649), with (as the book title implies) the melody that has always been associated with it. The complete hymn of nine 8-line stanzas, appeared in the hymnbook published by Christoph Runge* for Johann Crüger (the Crüger-Runge Gesangbuch, Berlin, 1653, D.M.
