David Evans
EVANS, David. b. Resolven, Glamorgan, 6 February 1874; d. Rhosllanerchrugog, 17 May 1948. He was educated at Arnold College, Swansea, and University College, Cardiff. He was a talented musician from an early age, gaining an Oxford DMus at the age of 21. He was organist and choirmaster of Jewin Street Welsh Presbyterian Church, London (1900-03) before returning to Cardiff as Professor of Music, a post which he held until 1939. He wrote the music for a cantata, The Coming of Arthur (1907) to words by Robert Bryan (1858-1920), and became a notable figure in Welsh music, editing Y Cerddor (‘The Musician’) from 1916 to 1921, and publishing a collection of 250 hymns with Welsh tunes, Moliant...
