‘Cuando el pobre’ (©1971) was written in the wake of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65). Peruvian Catholic theologian Gustavo Gutierrez (1928–2024) published Teología de la liberación (A Theology of Liberation) in 1971, the same year that this hymn was copyrighted, spreading Liberation Theology throughout Latin America and beyond.
